Yun Chen, a seasoned lawyer with over 16 years of experience, has embarked on a transformative journey as a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley. With a focus on international companies entering the Chinese market, Yun's expertise lies in navigating the complexities of foreign direct investment law and dispute resolution.
“I want to create more connections between Berkeley or even California and Shanghai,” Yun said.
As a legal professional, Yun's practice areas extend to brands like Lululemon, and Columbia, among others. However, her motivation to become a visiting scholar goes beyond her legal prowess. During the pandemic, Yun took time to reflect on her extensive experience in China, particularly in Shanghai and realized the importance of understanding Western culture to better serve her clients globally. Now at Berkeley, she aims to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western legal practices.
In her initial months at UCB, Yun immersed herself in the academic environment, attending lectures, meeting scholars, and exploring diverse fields. Her research approach involves a broad exploration before narrowing down her focus. Choosing UC Berkeley as her sole option, Yun was drawn to its reputation for openness towards China and its academic track record. The combination of academic excellence and the appealing Californian weather made Berkeley the perfect fit for her academic pursuits.
But Yun also acknowledges the language and cultural barriers faced by international scholars at Berkeley. In response, Yun took the initiative to create a chat group specifically for Chinese scholars, both new and experienced. The group serves as a platform for sharing experiences, insights, and mutual support, fostering a sense of community among those navigating similar challenges.
“I hope every scholar and every newcomer at the university can overcome this language barrier,” she added.
Yun's vision for her research extends beyond her time at Berkeley. She looks forward to contributing to Chinese culture and law and invites anyone interested in these fields to connect with her. Whether at Berkeley or upon her return to Shanghai, Yun Chen is poised to make meaningful contributions, fostering understanding and collaboration between legal communities on both sides of the globe.
