Visiting Scholar Benefits and Privileges

An appointee in the VSPA program may confer with faculty members, and, without the payment of tuition, audit classes and participate in seminars with the consent of the instructor. Please note, however, this privilege does not apply to courses offered by Summer Sessions or University Extension. Affiliates should be aware that they cannot expect other units, especially libraries, to provide them with work space.

The following privileges are available to visiting scholars:

Visiting scholars should return to their departments and see the CalNet Deputy for the purpose of securing a CalNet ID number, which is needed to secure all other campus services.

Visiting scholars may secure library-borrowing privileges by presenting their VSPA identification card along with photograph identification at the circulation desk in the Main Library.

Visiting scholars are entitled to obtain a Fee Lot Permit for use in campus parking lots at the faculty/staff rate upon presentation of their VSPA identification card. All visiting scholars are eligible to purchase campus shuttle services. Visiting scholars who reside in the East Bay are eligible for significant discounts with the AC Transit bus system.

All international visiting scholars who enter the United States with a non-immigrant visa and who intend to stay for one month or more, are required to have health insurance for themselves and their dependents. Information with regard to group health plans for international visiting scholars is available though University Health Services.

Domestic visiting scholars are not eligible for group health plans, however, referrals for independent coverage are available by calling the number above.

Informational meetings for are held every Tuesday morning at 10am at the Student Health Insurance Office located at Room 3200 of the Tang Center. For further information with regard to these informational meetings, please call the number listed above.

Visiting scholars with valid VPSA identification cards will receive discounted Cal Rec Club membership at the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF), Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA), Golden Bear Recreation Center (GBRC), and Edwards Track. All of the following are available with membership: five outdoor swimming pools, strength training with Cybex machines and free weights, cardiovascular machines, aerobics and fitness classes, tennis, racquetball, squash, handball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, massage therapy and much more. Membership information is available at the RSF Cashier's Station, open seven days a week, with calendars and program information posted on the website.
