BERKELEY, CA — Last Thursday, the newest wing of the Haas School of Business was buzzing with an energy rarely seen when complex scientific research meets high-level business strategy. The event marked the successful launch of "Skills Collision," a high-impact collaboration among the Berkeley Postdoc Entrepreneurship Program (BPEP) and the Haas School of Business.
The initiative was designed to address a persistent problem at the world’s leading public research university: while UC Berkeley’s postdoc and graduate communities produce world-class discoveries, the path to commercialization often remains opaque. "Skills Collision" serves as a bridge, connecting researchers with "startup-ready" ideas to the deep industry experience of Haas Evening & Weekend MBA (EWMBA) students.
A Vision for Integration
The success of the collaboration was made possible by the leadership of key partners across campus. While Dr. Naresh Sunkara, founder and Executive Director of BPEP, provided the foundational vision, Rhonda Shrader, Executive Director of the Berkeley Haas Entrepreneurship Program and Professional Faculty, was the key driver in making this collaboration happen. Her institutional support and dedication to cross-campus integration were instrumental in bringing these two distinct communities together, providing a formal foundation for 'collisions' between technical founders and business leaders that have historically happened only by chance.
Demystifying the "Mysterious Researcher"
The evening began with a necessary bridge-building moment. Despite the proximity of their departments, many MBA students, working professionals from various industries, were unfamiliar with the specific role of a "postdoc."
"I opened by explaining who these mysterious researchers are," said Dr. Sunkara. "Undergraduate researchers often get more visibility on campus than postdocs do. Explaining the depth of their work reinforced exactly why a platform connecting MBAs and postdocs matters so much."
The scientists provided crucial context for their work, explaining the decades of rigorous research that precede the "ideation" phase of a startup. This transparency fostered a newfound appreciation among the business students for the intellectual grit required to bring a product to the lab bench.
Pitching the Future
The heart of the event featured nine postdocs who presented research-based startup ideas to a standing-room-only crowd. Following the formal pitches, the room transitioned into a curated matchmaking session.
Unlike typical networking events, these "post-pitch" discussion tables remained highly engaged until the very end of the night. The MBA students, hailing from the #1-ranked EWMBA program in the country, offered the business acumen and functional expertise that many research labs lack.
"The room was full, and nearly everyone stayed through the entire event," Dr. Sunkara noted. "The postdocs were equally enthusiastic, getting significant face-to-face time with MBAs who can help translate their research into products that benefit the world."

A Berkeley Take on a Proven Idea
The format itself draws on a well-known intuition. Steve Jobs famously redesigned Pixar's headquarters around a single central atrium, forcing animators, writers, and engineers to physically run into each other throughout the day. The conviction was that the most valuable ideas in a company are the ones that emerge when people from different disciplines are in the same room long enough to actually talk. Skills Collision applies that same principle to the university, where the disciplines that need each other most, deep researchers and experienced operators, almost never share a table.
The program is also deliberately lightweight and replicable. Most research universities face a similar paradox: postdocs and graduate researchers do the bulk of the benchwork that produces commercializable discoveries, yet they remain largely invisible to business school students just a few buildings away. Pairing a postdoc entrepreneurship program with an evening MBA cohort, where students bring real industry experience rather than theoretical exposure, requires no new infrastructure, no new funding, and no curriculum overhaul. Any university with a research base and a working-professional MBA program can run a version of this.
"The pieces exist on every major research campus," said Dr. Sunkara. "Someone just has to put them in the same room and let the conversations happen.
A Permanent Path Forward
The success of the evening has sparked a conversation about making "Skills Collision" a permanent fixture of the Berkeley ecosystem. By removing the friction from the earliest stages of team formation, the program allows researchers to test and socialize their ideas in a low-stakes, lightweight environment.
To ensure the momentum continues, Riccardo Negri, a key coordinator for the program and a visiting student researcher in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, has already established a follow-up structure for participants to continue their discussions and explore formal team formation.
As the "Skills Collision" model proves, when you combine the best scientific minds with the sharpest business strategists at the best university in the world, the potential for global impact is limitless.
