Visiting Researcher Health Insurance
As an international visiting scholar or visiting student researcher, you are required to have health insurance for the duration of your appointment.
International visiting scholars and visiting student researchers can fulfill this requirement by purchasing health insurance through the Gallagher Benefit Services Visiting Scholar Benefits Plan (VSBP). VSBP offers three plan options, Basic, Standard, and Premium, all of which meet all of the insurance policy requirements for J-1 Visa holders.
Visiting Scholars who are U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents (“Green Card Holders”) may not purchase a VSBP plan as they are subject to the insurance requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). These scholars must purchase their own insurance and are not required to show proof of insurance.
The Basic Plan has the lowest monthly premium rate, but higher co-insurance costs. Please note that the Basic coverage does not cover any mental and nervous disorders benefits or preventive care services, including immunizations. Standard and Premium options have higher monthly premiums, but you may end up paying less out-of-pocket for care as you need it. The Premium plan has the most comprehensive coverage that many find most beneficial while residing in the U.S., especially for families and longer-term stays. The VSBP also offers voluntary dental insurance. New scholars and students may enroll up to 30-45 days prior to their appointment start date.
As an international visiting scholar or visiting student researcher, you must enroll in one of the plan options within 31 days of your appointment start date. Failure to enroll on a timely basis will prevent you from receiving benefits for the current plan year. You may elect to waive out of purchasing either the Basic, Standard, or Platinum plans if you are buying your own health insurance. To do so, you must complete the waiver process. Remember to ensure that any insurance that you purchase meets the Department of State requirements.
